The Learning House Kindergarten Curriculum
Kindergarten is a very exciting and adventurous year and we want to do everything we can to promote that excitement!
At The Learning House, our Kindergarten curriculum creates the adventure by using Math and Science at the core of our curriculum. These topics are engaging and motivating because it’s all done with a Full Participation™ hands-on approach. This method gives children their own set of materials so they can ask, answer, and ask even more questions while manipulating their discoveries. This is what researchers call Inquiry Based Learning; children asking pertinent questions and getting answers to their interests.

Here’s our Kindergarten Curriculum at a glance.
- Math: Counting, writing numbers, patterns, shapes, measuring tools, Math sentences (a.k.a. addition), greater than/less than, and the list goes on. All done in a hands-on approach and worksheets are child made; no workbooks needed.
- Science: Volcanoes, earthquakes, electricity, simple machines, flight and this list goes on as well. Friday is our Science day so we can explore in depth the topic of our study. Science is one of the greatest ways to help children develop critical thinking and problem solving skills.
- Reading: This is such a developmental kind of activity where some children are ready and others need more time learning its foundations. Our Reading program allows for the varied levels of each student so that each progresses at their level and speed. Phonics is an integral part of our Reading program.
- Writing: Our handwriting program is D’Nealian and we use a developmental approach to writing stories, reports, or anything else that requires recording. As for spelling, we use a phonetic approach and encourage children to spell words the way they hear them. After they’ve seen common sight words a million times, then we expect them to spell the word correctly.
- Talking/Listening: We use Show and Tell and Author’s Chair to help children gain the confidence needed to speak in front of their peers. When appropriate, children are asked to speak with a partner to share predictions, thoughts, and ideas.
- Geography/Social Studies: This curriculum is built around and old theme with a new twist! Many Kindergartens explore the child’s world: communities, community helpers, each person’s place in the communities, etc. We take this same theme and “travel” Around The World to places like Hawaii, Japan, Iceland, Greenland, and Africa. While “traveling”, we learn about continents, the people of those countries, their cultures, and compare/contrast with our own community.
- Specials: Music on Mondays, P.E. on Tuesdays, Library on Wednesdays, Art on Thursdays.
